Standing Tara, Gilt Bronze and Copper Alloy, 16 inches tall
The luminous rose-tinted copper patina of this Standing Tara inspired me to offer her here. Cast in a gilt bronze and copper alloy, the patina enhances her beautiful features and lends her an ethereal, softly glowing presence.
Her style is mid to late 20th-century Tibetan devotional sculpture. While her exact age is indeterminate, the variation and depth of the patina suggest the passage of time.
Tara is the revered goddess of Compassion and swift action. According to Buddhist tradition, she sprang forth from the tears of Avalokiteshvara when his vow to liberate all beings was being severely tested. From those tears arose the Taras, appearing to assist him in his boundless compassion for all.
