Prajnaparamita is known as The Mother of the Buddhas and the Female Form of Transcendental Wisdom. She honors the feminine, ancient and contemporary. To bring her to life, in the hands of a master carver, from a block of suar wood, takes 5-6 months. This image is based on the Prajnaparamita originating from 13th century Sinhasari, East Java, Indonesia which is considered to be a masterpiece of classical Hindu-Buddhist Art of ancient Java. We have sold this one and have a new one in process.
In Bali the wood for carving is disappearing and the young people from carving families are taking the easier route of working in hand phone shops or doing villa construction. This once flourishing art in Bali is done by artists who genetically come from the carvers in the courts of the Javanese Palaces. With the rise of Islam at end of 15th century they fled to Bali, bringing with them they a strong influx of Hindu/Buddhist arts, literature and religion that makes Bali culture so rich and unique. Often a young carver would be almost as good as the older carvers when he first began. We are supporting this art, infused with a power that the world needs, as much as we can.
This statue is still in process. The new one will be similar to the completed photo.
