Patacara was an Indian woman who lived during the 6th century BCE in what is now Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. She was born into a rich family, but fell in love and ran away with her lower cast love. They lived happily for many years but then when she wished to have her second child born in the home of her family, they began the long journey home. On the way, the first child was washed into a river, her husband died trying to save them and the new baby died. When she arrived at her home, she found that her parents had also died, making her insane with grief. She ranted and raved and tore her clothing off. When she encountered the Buddha, telling him her story, he used her grief to guide her to immediately understood the nature of impermanence and her interconnectedness with all beings, who also experience painful, as well as delighful, changes.  She became a sotapanna, the first stage of Arayahood, those who have attained 'the fruits of the path The Buddha appointed her the foremost Keeper of the Vinaya, "Rules of Conduct" of the monastic life amongst the Nuns.
