This little hand painted Kannon emirates gentleness and quiet. A wonderful little state to keep near you or to send to a friend who needs her.
Kannon is the Japanese Buddha of Compassion, Quan Yin in another culture and form and thus is a Bodhisattva, a being who is enlightened and has vowed to return to free all being from suffering before resting. We have preserved the carving marks from the hand and knife that carved this statue, rather than sanding the wood smooth because have always loved to see the carving process in the statue and now it is a reminder of a beautiful story. It is told that at Temple No. 10 on the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage (29 of these temples are dedicated to Kannon) a beautiful young woman wove cloth for the priest, Kobo Daish, who was doing his seven-day ascetic practice there. When he finished, she told him of her loyalty to Kannon and Daishi carved a statue of Kannon, bowing 3 times before each cut of the blade into the sacred wood. When he finished, she asked him to ordain her as a Buddhist nun, and as he did, she transformed directly into Kannon herself. Kannon helps women in childbirth, protects soldiers, seafarers, constructions workers as well as farm animals, pets and all other animal beings. Most everyone
