This image of a Buddhist woman, Patacara, is carved from suar wood, the traditional wood for many Buddhist statues. She is 16 inches tall. The wood grain is rich and interesting. She is serene and has a feeling of inner strength.  Her hand in the 'earth touching Mudra' used by the Buddha at the moment of his enlightenment.

Patacara's story began with passionate love and became one of  great loss. She went out of her mind with grief,  living on the street, mostly naked and ranting while people hurled stones at her. Upon meting the Buddha, she prostrated at his feet in despair and describing her family tragedies. The Buddha talked with her, using Buddhist doctrines and Patacara immediately saw the nature of impermanence. She was transformed and committed her life to practice.  The Buddha appointed her the foremost Keeper of the Vinaya , "Rules of Conduct" of the monastic life for the Nuns. Patacara reached the first stage of arayahood, those who have attained 'the fruits of the path'.
